The Research of Adventure.
At ARL NorthAm, we spend a great deal of time and effort developing
and researching adventure. To use the Hollywood term, we had to "re-
imagine" adventure because it's something that this 21st Century
lifestyle has almost completely forgotten. Gone are the days of
navigation using the stars and a compass, being replaced by modern
satellites and the Global Positioning System. Sure, technology has
certainly made life better and more convenient for some of us, but the
nature of adventure requires us to eschew conveniences and strike
out into the world to take our chances. This does not mean that we
need to abandon technology, quite the contrary; technology can
enhance adventure and the discovery of the unknown. The research
phase of what we do encompasses a comprehensive cross section of
several disciplines and we take into account many variables to ensure
that each adventure we develop will contribute to the overall
enlightenment of the participants. Anyone can organize a rally from
London to Mongolia in cars of dubious quality, charge a lot of money,
offer no support, and stick an "ADVENTURE" label on it. ARL NorthAm
and Go Help adventures are about discovery and philanthropy; we're
not profiteers running a slap-dash travel agency. ARL NorthAm's
research phase will examine the scientific as well as the environmental
and social aspects of each adventure and the potential for
philanthropy and discovery
The Adventure of Research.
Once the adventure is starts, the discovery phase takes over. During
this phase, the participants will be learning about cultures, technology,
geographic aspects, biology, anthropology, and sociology, just to
name a few. Almost every scientific discipline could be represented
(we’re still trying to figure out the cosmology aspects – Doctor
Hawking, any ideas?) and it’s up to the participants how many they
want to cover. You could learn everything there is to know about the
Tibetan Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis) or you can learn about the
making of apple strudel in Prague. Find out what they're doing to help
orphans with AIDS in Romania. Photograph the faces you encounter
and see how they change with the landscape or try to navigate your
way using a sextant and a modern quartz watch. Research the alcohol
content of beers in the Czech Republic and how to propose a toast to
honor your hosts. Build a ger in Mongolia and donate your time to
helping medical personnel in Ulaan Baatar. The important thing is that
the participants learn, report their findings, and share facts no matter
how trivial they may seem at the time. Learning is itself an adventure
whether you leave your doorstep or circumnavigate the world. How
you use the knowledge you gain is up to you, but rest assured all of
the ARL NorthAm adventures you participate in will change you for the
rest of your life.
If it doesn’t we haven’t done our jobs and you haven't done yours.
