The Inaugural ARL NorthAm Adventure. Drive 3500
miles across the United States and Canada to New
York, ship the car to London, England, drive another
16,000 miles and pass through as many as 24
countries, 8 mountain ranges, 4 deserts, rogue
bandits, camel and yak crossings, unstable fledgling
governments, bad roads, no roads, countries ending
in "Stan," a total solar eclipse, 1 Great Wall. and a
Monolith to Sydney, Australia in a 1991 Geo Metro with
a 3 cylinder 993cc engine. Crazy? You bet!
Circumnavigate the globe in planes, trains, ferries,
and a $500 automobile. What's not crazy is our reason
for doing it. It's all for very important charities like The
Christina Noble Children's Foundation and the
Hemophilia Foundation of Northern California, HFNC.
Why We Do What We Do

We firmly hold that the world we experience
now is a very tiny part of the global viewpoint.
We have a strong belief that the spirit of
adventure, curiosity, and the need to connect
with others are qualities inherent in all of us.
The best way available to us to experience the
diversity of the planet is not to fly over it, but to
travel through it on the ground. As we attempt
to drive around the planet, we will be
educating people through our experiences
from the ground level. We’ll be striving to
develop a genuine perspective that engages
the public in a totally different way while
working with charitable organizations and
promoting their efforts. By using a Geo Metro,
and later, Chang Jiang motorcycles, we’ll
minimize our impact on the environment while
pursuing adventure of all kinds and
immersing ourselves in the cultures and
customs we encounter.

Carbon Footprint Mitigation
As fuel-efficient as these vehicles are, these
adventures are not without environmental
impact; therefore we’ll be planting enough
trees to offset our calculated carbon debt to
the planet.
Ah, the venerable Chang Jiang 750 Motorcycle and
sidecar.  Capable of carrying up to three people in varying
degrees of discomfort, the Chang Jiang 750 has been in
production for over 68 years! Literally millions of these
bikes exist in China, Central Asia, and Russia. This
shining example of a Soviet-era knock-off of the BMW R71
can be had for about $2000 USD, making it the perfect
vehicle for an ARL NorthAm Adventure to raise cash for
charity. Fly to Beijing with yourself and as many friends as
the CJ 750 has seats and take on the route that made
Prince Scipione Borghese famous: Peking to Paris! Only
he did it in a car 100 years ago.  And Peking is called
Beijing now.  And there are now roads where there were
once only camel tracks. Whatever. The route you and your
two buds take to Paris once you get on your CJ 750 is up
to you, as long as you remember that once you take off,
you're on your own. We will tell you that this phrase, more
than any other, will get you help with your CJ 750
anywhere in Russia:
"Пожалуйста восстановите мой
мотоцикл. Вот - некоторая водка!"
(Please repair my
motorcycle. Here - some vodka!)
"The Number One Most Best Quality Motorcycle"
The ARL NorthAm way to convoy
with friends to Paris.
When I heard that India's Tata Motors is
launching the world's least expensive car,
the Nano, I couldn't help but think of foolish,
interesting, and potentially life-threatening
ways to use it.
Nanos to Novosibirsk: A challenging route
that will take you through the Indian
subcontinent and into Russia via China or
the "stans."
To Tutong in a Tata: The name of this
adventure just rolls off of the tongue,
doesn't it? How much fun is this? Through
India, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand, the
Malay Penisula and across the sea to
Borneo and into the Sultanate of Brunei.
Dodge monsoons, elephants, and
potholes. Southeast Asian adventure!
